A 1917 Borgel Cased Silver Trench Watch from WW1 in absolutely stunning condition and a large 35mm case which is amazing!

Patented in 1891 by inventor and businessman Francois Borgel, the Borgel watch case became hugely popular not only by military officers but watch collectors ever since. Francois started out making watch cases for pocket watches before moving into the manufacture of wristwatch cases. Early adopters of the Borgel cases were Longines & IWC among numerous others. After Francois’ death in 1912 the business was carried over by his daughter Louisa. Louisa then went on to sell the business in 1924 to the Taubert family of Le Locle who operated the business until the 1970’s, during their running of the business they supplied watch cases for the likes of Patek Philippe & Vacheron Constantin to name a few.

What’s On Offer

The watch on offer here is a design mirrored by many other brands and is still inspiration for watches today. The refreshing white enamel dial is stunning and a real contrast against many black dial military watches. The lumed military style numerals are striking and interesting and compliment the cathedral hands. The seconds sub dial keeps the dial tidy and legible with the black applied outer track ring on the edge of the dial which wraps the overall package up nicely. The “onion” crown is another highlight of this particular watch and adds an air of class to this piece. The overall condition of the watch is remarkable and has little or no sign of significant wear or damage for a watch of this period.

Interestingly the case back is professionally engraved "W.A.W 1917" along with another hand engraving which very interestingly reads "Elmar Rd, London, 1945 Burtenshaw" so we are summising that perhaps this watch went to both wars and survived to tell the tale! A great story for you to do further research on after purchase.

Running well after recently being serviced by military watchmaker John Senior.
