Omega Constellation Pie Pan and Crosshair Dial - c.1963 Gold Capped Case - with Cal.561 movement.

Still part of the Omega lineup today, the Constellation remains the pinnacle of the Omega dress watch collection with many grand and prestigious models having been released and enjoyed since the models inception in 1952.

The Constellation was released in 1952 and was named in honour of the Constellation jet that flew during World War 2. Available in steel, yellow gold and rose gold as well as three grades of finishing (Standard, Deluxe and Grand Luxe), the Constellation was Omega's flagship watch from the very beginning. One of the things that make the Constellation stand out from the other Omega families of that time, is that the dials on these Constellation models were richly decorated. The use of gold dials, gold hour markers, onyx hour markers, gold hands and gold applied logos and wording is something that wasn’t seen on any of their other collections to this extent. Some of the gold dials had a satin-brushed finish, others had a sun-guilloche pattern or a cross-hatched dial. There were many different dials available for the Omega Constellation in the 1950s and 1960s.

What's on offer

The watch on offer here features the movement number 2093xxxx which dates the watch to 1963. The dial is the classic and sought after “Pie Pan” design which is both elegant and striking and sets the scene for a truly enjoyable watch to wear and exudes class the added bonus of the cross hair only adds to this. The gold case finishes the package off beautifully and the lugs are subtle and classy. Many Constellation models around this period feature prominent and striking lugs which in some configurations takes away from the design of the dial, in this variant the elegance is kept intact with the more subtle and classic lug design.

The case remains in wonderful shape and the dial has light blemishes which adds to the character of the watch and in our view creates a lovely warmth and patina to the dial. The baton indices again instil class and elegance along with the flat bezel which means the watch wouldn’t look out of place on the wrist of someone at a formal event. On a simple but effective black strap, this timepiece looks sublime and further provides proof of Omega’s rich history and pedigree at the very top end of the horological market. No wonder this model still exists today, wonderful.
