Here we have the quintessential classic, a stainless steel Rolex Air King ref: 5500. This watch hales from 1971 and this is borne out by the inside case back which Is engraved iii/71. This simple time only display and clean all steel design is what has made this watch so popular. It made its first official appearance as a reference 4925 and has since been followed by several references as Rolex further refined the Air King design. It wasn’t until 1957 that Rolex released the reference 5500 Air King.

This being the precision model, it houses a calibre 1520 movement. The 1530’s were fitted in watches that were signed ‘Super Precision’ on the dial. The movement in this particular watch is exceptionally clean as is the rest of the watch. It is an altogether well preserved and cared for piece, even though it is over 47 years old.

The silver sunburst  ‘T Swiss T’ dial on this 1971 Air King is in superb condition with steel applied Rolex crown and baton index markers. The tritium lume plots at each outer tip, which are very well preserved and glow beautifully, as do the tritium hands under U.V. light.

The Rolex crown with five pointed logo is believed original to the watch as it is marked with a single underline denoting it to be a TwinLock which is correct for the period. This crown was originally rated 100m waterproof because of its two rubber O-ring seals.  

The case looks to have been lightly polished historically but is still sharp and fat and comes on its original steel Oyster bracelet ref: 7835 with 257 end links, having a good sized bracelet with 13 links.
