A Charismatic Omega "Dirty Dozen" Military Issued Watch c.1945 in Remarkable Original Condition with Attractive Caramel Lume. Very Collectible With Much Historical Significance.
Popular and much sought after, the WWW military watches were the first to be specially designed and custom-made for the British Army.
In the 1940s The Ministry of Defence developed a specification for military issue wristwatches. The specification is referred to as W.W.W - Watch, Wrist, and Waterproof. W.W.W. is marked on the case back along with the serial number and manufacturer code which in this case is Y for Omega.
There were 12 different manufacturers who produced watches to MoD specification and they are collectively referred to as “The Dirty Dozen”.
Only around 25,000 Omega, WWW watches were made for the British Army during WW2 and we don't know how many of these survived, the dwindling numbers combined with the obvious historical significance make these watches really collectible.
What’s On Offer
You will be hard pushed to find a more attractive example of the Omega Dirty Dozen watch, here in original condition with its stark black radium dial, original recessed subdial, sharp Arabic numerals, and the jewel in its crown, beautiful caramel lume which brings such warmth to the whole dial. Although these watches were never made to be particularly stylish, although, we think they are ;-), their beauty lies in simplicity and of course historical significance. The Omega wears particularly well on the wrist, with its slender bezel giving the illusion of larger proportions, and its hefty crown pushing out the dimensions a touch. The steel case and lugs are in exceptional shape given the age of this watch and it looks well on the soft black leather strap it is paired with, however, if you fancy changing it up for something a little funkier, NATO-style straps look great on these watches. A charismatic addition to any collection, and an absolute joy for any military enthusiast.
The watch was also very recently serviced by John Senior, the well known military watchmaker, and at the point of service a new mainspring and balance were fitted along with a NOS plexiglass, and the watch was timed and tested so is all good and ready to be enjoyed by you!
