IWC Schaffhausen Automatic - 18ct Gold Dress Watch with Date - Pie Pan Dial - Cal. 8531

A Stunning Solid 18 Carat Gold International Watch Company Dress Watch Dated, c.1958, with a Caliber 8531, Automatic Movement, with Date and a Beautiful Pie Pan Dial

Whilst gold dress watches from the 1950s and 1960s were often designed a cut above the rest, very few survive faithful to their original condition. This IWC goes against the grain in this regard, showing remarkably little wear on the case for a watch made of the precious metal as soft as solid 18ct gold. It is a simply stunning design, built with a large degree of craftsmanship reserved for only the finest watches of the time (1958)! Its lugs curve gently away from both the case edges and the glass, making for slim, elegant wear which sits close to the wrist without feeling too small. This is thanks, in part, to the gently raised case back which ensures that the watch still sits proud of the wrist. It's a case design that looks, and perhaps more importantly, wears beautifully. The pie-pan dial features a subtle layering of different gold tones and has inherited a milder creamy tone to it with age, adding a tonne of vintage character. There is a date aperture at 3 o'clock, and as pie-pan implies, a sunken outer area to the dial which features a charcoal grey tracking ring.

Inside this raised case back is another pioneering element to the watch: one of the earliest automatic movements to fit inside a slimmer case than the 'bumper' movements: hence the case back only being slightly raised. It took until the 1950s for automatic movements to be streamlined to be able to sit in such thin cases, but 1958 (when this watch was produced roughly) was when IWC cracked it, making the Caliber 8531 21-jewel automatic movement that sits inside this timepiece. It has a revolutionary 44-hour power reserve and keeps time excellently when worn or wound regularly. This powerhouse of a movement was also used in the renowned IWC Ingenieur model of the same period which is highly desirable and sought after by collectors and commands premium prices when they come to market!

What's on offer

A very well preserved 1958 vintage 18ct gold dress watch on a new black Hirsch leather strap. There are light marks visible on the case back, though elsewhere these are much less noticeable, with the case edges still appearing particularly sharp. The dial has some signs of age but is still stunning!
