Trench watches, the precursors to modern wristwatches, emerged during World War I as practical adaptations of pocket watches for military use. Soldiers needed timepieces that were easily accessible and reliable in the harsh conditions of the trenches. Initially, they would attach pocket watches to their wrists using makeshift leather straps. Recognizing the need, manufacturers, such as Omega and Longines, began producing purpose-built wristwatches, often encased in metal to offer extra protection against the elements. These early wristwatches featured large, luminous dials for visibility in low light, and rugged designs to withstand the rigours of combat. Radium was widely used to make the hands and numerals glow. The convenience and functionality of the trench watch quickly gained popularity beyond the military. Post-war, they catalyzed the widespread adoption of wristwatches in civilian fashion, marking the transition from pocket watches and establishing the wristwatch as a ubiquitous accessory.

What's on OfferJust look at how well this watch has been preserved over the years - that stunning white dial with its Breguet numerals, blue 12 and a recessed sub-seconds dial at 6 o'clock. It also boasts a crisp outer minute track. The dial is beautifully encased in a gold Borgal Case (François Borgel - master case maker) and has that stunning detailing on the bezel. The articulated lugs are also well-preserved as is the over-sized crown. You can see a little discolouration on the sub-seconds dial but it is nothing of any concern - part of the joy of collecting vintage watches is enjoying the natural ageing process they go through. This is a beautiful watch crafted from gold so it will no doubt have belonged to a serving officer - it looks stunning on the wrist and will certainly inspire some admiring glances. This watch is sure to pique the interest of military and vintage enthusiasts alike.
