Smiths - Mark II - 8 Day Military Aircraft Dashboard Clock - Dated 1939

£750.00GBP
vws1935

An Incredibly Rare Smiths 1939 R.A.F, Aircraft, 8 Day, Dashboard Clock with Jaeger Le Coultre Movement in Superb Condition.

Made in 1939, this clock will have seen extensive wartime service built into the cockpit of an RAF plane (Spitfires and Lancasters) flown during and after WW2. These superb clocks were made by Smiths (MA) Ltd at their Cricklewood, London factory. Smiths made the cases and assembled the clocks using unmarked Jaeger LeCoultre Swiss movements. The 6A/579 was produced from around 1934 up to 1940, when production ceased.

What’s On Offer

The stark black dial is in good condition and is marked "8 DAYS", "MK II", "No 3638/39" (/39 for 1939), "S. Smith & Sons (MA) Ltd. London".

Engraved into the back of the clock is "AM" which denotes Air Ministry, plus a Crown and the clock serial number "3638" which matches the serial number on the dial. Printed in red on the inside of the glass is "SET DUMMY HOUR HAND AFTER WINDING"; this printing is original and clear. The lume on the Arabic numerals has remained intact and aged to a beautiful caramel colour as has the lume on the Cathedral hands.

The bezel should be turned anti-clockwise to wind the movement. To set the time, slide left the small lever at the top right-hand corner of the case, and turn the bezel anti-clockwise.

The red "Time Of Trip" hands are called "dummy hands". The red hour hand is painted on the inside of the glass and has survived remarkably well with very little deterioration, it is set by turning the bezel clockwise with the time setting lever disengaged.  Press the small lever at the top right-hand corner of the case upwards, and turn the bezel anti-clockwise to set the time.

The clock enjoys full functionality and can be fitted to any flat surface, it would make a fantastic vintage desk clock, or could easily be mounted on the dashboard of a classic car, suitable for any military, clock or classic car enthusiast.
