The Hamilton Watch Company is a Swiss manufacturer of wristwatches based in Bienne, Switzerland. Founded in 1892 as an American firm, the Hamilton Watch Company ended American manufacture in 1969. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, the Hamilton Watch Company eventually became integrated into the Swatch Group, the world's largest watch manufacturing and marketing conglomerate.

During World War II, production of consumer watches was stopped, with all watches manufactured being shipped to troops. More than one million watches were sent overseas. As one of the leading companies in the American watch industry, and having already had experience supplying the military, Hamilton was a natural choice to manufacture timepieces for the armed forces.

Hamilton produced W10 watches for the British Military between 1973 and 1976, and it is estimated that around 30,000 were produced during these three years. W10 was a general code assigned to a certain type of equipment from the MoD meaning other brands such as CWC were also tasked with producing them as well.

What’s On Offer

This 1973, issued soldiers watch was one of the last mechanically wound military watches and the design hadn’t changed much since WW2. The monocoque case was designed for strength and the simplistic dial for clarity, the size is substantial enough for modern everyday wear. The ‘T’ marking on the dial denotes a tritium applied lume, the original 1970s material used to make dials luminescent.

The watch back is also marked /I\ and 12601/73, making it a 1973, issued watch. The watch is in really good condition, having retained its original brushed finish and sharp edges. The glass is unmarked and there are very few signs of light wear. The original lume is still intact across both the original sword hands and the hour plots, which are particularly nice buttery colour.

A real stylish watch, with the added bonus of being steeped in military history, we have paired this watch with a NATO strap but it would look equally great on a leather strap or a Bonklip style bracelet for a more individual look. These watches make for an affordable way to get into genuine military-issued watches and with the prices increasing for originals like this example, now is the time to buy.

This watch is running well and keeping good time after a recent service by our watchmaker and is sold with our 12 months warranty for your peace of mind.
