1980’s Vintage Cartier Tank watch in 18k Gold.

Case and Crown

18k Gold “Tank” case with a signed screwed down back and a Cartier, Cabochon Sapphire set crown. The back of the case has the numbers 896041 and 2163 below that.

Dial, Hands and Glass

The signed silvered dial has an engine turned sunburst patterned finish, black Roman numerals and blued steel hand.

Movement

The watch has an excellent Cartier Calibre 21 rectangular mechanical hand wound movement, which is based upon the Frederic Piguet Calibre 21 and is highly finished. The lever escapement movement with monometallic balance, and Kif shock absorber runs at 18,000 BPH and had a 42-hour power reserve when new!

Bracelet/Strap

The watch has an original black, Cartier leather strap, with an 18k gold Cartier deployment clasp. This strap is showing some signs of wear so the watch is also fitted with another genuine black leather Cartier strap with a gold plated pin buckle. Both straps are supplied with the watch.

Box and Papers

The watch comes with its original red Cartier presentation box together with its numbered Cartier service papers.

A detailed invoice together with a written warranty will be provided at the point of sale.

The Cartier ‘Tank’ is one of the most famous and successful of all wristwatch designs. Created in 1917, “The Tank” is said to have been inspired by the military tanks of the First World War. However, conjecture remains as to whether, in fact, it was a natural progression of design from the earliest Cartier wristwatches, such as the Santos, which debuted in 1904. Whilst its elegant form may appear simple, its design was inspirational and, undoubtedly, heavily influenced the development of shaped wristwatch cases. Over the years, “The Tank” has appeared in many different designs and with a variety of movements.
